After a week in New Caledonia in August 2009, we continued on via Australia to Papua New Guinea, where we joined a group tour run by Rockjumper Birding Tours, with David Hodinett, an excellent guide. We began with a 4-day visit to the island of New Britain, followed by nearly 3 weeks on the main island birding the area around Port Moresby, then the highlands at Mount Hagen and Tari, and finally the far northwest along the Fly River. Papua New Guinea is best known among birders and non-birders alike for its Birds of Paradise. They were very hard to photograph but Nancy did get some good pictures of the BOP species.
